Obtaining energy efficiency labelling or Minimum Energy Performance Standards approval for equipment

ESV has implemented a new upfront online payment system for all energy efficiency applications.

This payment system will only accept Visa, MasterCard and Amex credit cards.

The additions to the database will instantly generate and email approval letters and payment receipts.

Find out which electrical appliances must have an energy efficiency label and/or meet Minimum Energy Performance Standards (MEPS), and how to apply for approval at www.energyrating.gov.au.

The equipment energy efficiency labelling program includes a range of activities, undertaken with the co-operation of industry, to promote the manufacture and purchase of energy efficient equipment. Energy labelling is designed to make energy efficiency of a product a key feature in its selection.

ESV approves this equipment so that it may be supplied or offered for supply. It also conducts compliance audits of retail showrooms to ensure that relevant equipment is registered and correctly labelled for energy efficiency. Check testing of equipment is also undertaken to verify and ensure that the claims made by manufacturers and importers on the energy label are correct.

Guidelines for the approval of energy labels

Manufacturers and importers must ensure that proclaimed equipment is submitted to the ESV for approval prior to supply.

This involves the submission of:

  • a full laboratory test report (submitted in the format supplied in part 1 of the relevant Standard)
  • completed application form
  • sample energy label (if applicable)
  • Applicable registration fee

Approval advice is normally provided within 20 working days of the receipt by ESV of a completed application.

Once the equipment is approved, the manufacturer or importer must make arrangements for the energy label to be printed and affixed to the equipment. The manufacturer or importer is also responsible for supplying replacement labels to retailers who require them.

Application forms

Applications must be made online at the Energy Rating website

Review of ESV decisions

If you seek a review of a labeling decision, you must apply to the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT).
