Gas supply for a new building or complex

Find out how to get gas supplied to and available at a new property.

In Victoria, Natural Gas and LP Gas are popular choices for home heating, water heating and cooking as well as for industry and commerce. If you have chosen gas at your new property, a builder or consultant must ensure that a gas supply is available and that the gas installation has been certified when it comes to the handover.

Getting gas

To obtain a gas supply for your premises, a licensed gasfitter is required to submit either a Gasfitting Notice to Energy Safe Victoria or a Compliance Certificate to the Plumbing Industry Commission depending on the type of installation.

Certificates or Notices?

Compliance Certificates typically apply to most residential dwellings, apartments in buildings up to three stories and single shops.

Gasfitting Notices apply to multiple residential units, motels, hotels, larger commercial buildings, health care facilities and industrial premises.

Both a Certificate and a Notice is required for high-rise apartments over three stories or common meter installations. The requirements for Compliance Certificate and Gasfitting Notices apply for both Natural Gas and LP Gas installations.
