After fixing a gas emergency who is responsible?
Gas distribution through pipes and meters
All gas pipes up to and including the meter are owned by the gas distributor (sometimes referred to as ‘distribution assets’). After making safe, repair of assets are the responsibility of your distributor however; charges may apply if you have damaged the gas meter or service pipe on the property.
Customer piping and gas appliances
Customer gas pipes and appliances, after the gas meter, are the property of the owner or occupier. After making safe the emergency gasfitter will advise the gas user to contact their own licensed gasfitter to arrange for a permanent repair to be made. Permanent repair costs are a matter for the customer and their own gasfitter.
LP Gas in cylinders
Generally gas tanks & cylinders are owned by the LP Gas supplier and repairs to that asset will their responsibility.
Customers owned LP Gas cylinder
The State Gas Emergency Service does not discriminate between gas users and will respond to requests from LP Gas cylinder owners. The cost to make safe would be charged to the owner. Where a customer owns their LP Gas cylinder it is the owner’s responsibility. Energy Safe Victoria advises owners to employ a competent organisation experienced in LP Gas cylinders and apparatus for their repair.
