Any suggested amendments to these guidelines can be provided to the email address: info@esv.vic.gov.au

  • Guidelines for Electrical Safety in Mines These guidelines are being developed in conjunction with the Department of Natural Resources and Environment (DNRE) and in consultation with the Victorian Mining Industry.
    • This publication is being designed for use by mine operators and mine workers. It provides essential information on electrical safety requirements including risk of electrical incidents and accidents.
    • All people and organisations involved in the mining industry should understand that all electrical work undertaken in this industry must be undertaken in accordance with the Electricity Safety Act 1998 and Electricity Safety (Installations) Regulations 1999.

  • Supervision Guidelines for Apprentices Working on Electrical Installations These guidelines have been produced by the Committee for Safe Working on Electrical Installations, established by the Office of the Chief Electrical Inspector (OCEI) (now known as ESV). The Committee consists of representatives from the following organisations:
    • National Electrical & Communications Association (NECA) Victorian Chapter
    • Electrical Trades Union (ETU) Southern States Branch
    • VICTEC Group Training Company
    • Victorian WorkCover Authority
    • TAFE Colleges
    • TXU Australia
    • Australian Industries Group (AiGroup)
    • Office of the Chief Electrical Inspector (OCEI) (now known as ESV)

ESV is grateful for the time and effort put into developing these guidelines. Further, ESV acknowledges the publication dated October 2002 titled “National Supervision Policy Guideline for Electrotechnology Apprenticeships” published by ElectroComms and Energy Utilities Qualifications Standards Body of Australia Ltd, trading as EE-Oz Training Standards.

  • Guidelines for Owners & Occupiers of Premises in relation to Electric Work ESV has been concerned for some time about unqualified and unlicensed persons carrying out their own ‘electrical work’ including appliance repairs and installation of fixed wiring. As such, ESV provides the following information to assist owner and occupiers of premises for the carrying out of electrical work.
  • Certificates of Electrical Safety - responsibility of RECs & electricians The attached Guidelines for using Certificates of Electrical Safety on construction sites and elsewhere, together with Guidelines for the Supervision of Apprentice Electricians, have been provided to enable the industry to understand the requirements as laid down in the Electricity Safety Act 1998 and Electricity Safety (Installations) Regulations 1999.
These Guidelines were first introduced in 1999 and issued to the industry in hardcopy form. Over the past few months there have been increasing questions asked about these Guidelines and the request for them to be made available in electronic form. As such, questions about these Guidelines can be sent to ESV by facsimile (9686 2197) or e-mail info@esv.vic.gov.au.
