Electrician's Licence
Electrician's license
An Electrician's License entitles the holder to carry out all types of electrical installation work in Victoria without supervision.
However, to contract, or offer to contract, to carry out electrical installation work, a licensed electrician must also be registered as an electrical contractor.
Who may apply to be licensed
You may apply for a license if you meet one of the following criteria:
Criteria 1
Completed a four year contract of training as an apprentice electrician that included at least 12 months experience carrying out electrical installation work with written confirmation by the employer; and
Hold a Certificate III in Electro-technology Systems Electrician; and
Satisfactorily completed the Licensed Electrician’s Assessment (LEA) conducted by a body approved by the ESV, which is currently

EPIC Industry Training Board
Criteria 2
Already holds an Electrician (Supervised) License; and
Holds a Certificate III in Electro-technology Systems Electrician or equivalent; and
Completed 12 months electrical installation work as the holder of a Electrician (Supervised) License with written confirmation by the employer;
Satisfactorily completed the Licensed Electrician’s Assessment (LEA) conducted by a body approved by the ESV, which is currently

and
NMIT
Criteria 3
Holds a Supervised Worker's License; and
Completed a four-year contract of training as an electrical fitter, and
Completed 12 months electrical installation work as the holder of a Supervised Worker's License with written confirmation by the employer; and
Satisfactorily completed the Licensed Electrician’s Assessment (LEA) assessment conducted by a body approved by the ESV, which is currently

Criteria 4
The person's standard of qualifications, proficiency and experience in electrical installation work is at least of an equivalent standard to that required under 1, 2 or 3 above.
Applying to be licensed
Criteria 1 – an
application form
should be lodged with the ESV with the following:
The Certificate of Completion of Apprenticeship from the Office of Training and Further Education (OTTE); and
Evidence of 12 months experience in carrying out electrical installation work (for example: Letter from employer giving details); and
Certificate III in Electrotechnology Systems Electrician; and
Licensed Electrician’s Assessment (LEA) Certificate from a body approved by the ESV, currently
NMIT
or
EPIC ITB
; and
Application fee.
Criteria 2 - an
application form
should be lodged with the ESV with the following:
The Electrician's (Supervised) License; and
Certificate III in Electrotechnology Systems Electrician; and
Evidence of 12 months experience in carrying out electrical installation work (for example: Letter from employer giving details); and
Licensed Electrician’s Assessment (LEA) Certificate from a body approved by the ESV, currently
EPIC ITB
or
NMIT
; and
Application fee.
Criteria 3 – an
application form
should be lodged with the ESV with the following:
The Supervised Workers License; and
The Certificate of Completion of Apprenticeship from the Office of Training and Further Education (OTTE); and
Evidence of 12 months experience in electrical installation work since being issued with a Supervised Worker's License (for example: Letter from employer giving details); and
Licensed Electrician’s Assessment (LEA) Certificate from a body approved by the ESV, currently
NMIT
or
EPIC ITB
; and
Application fee.
Criteria 4 – an
application form
should be lodged with ESV, demonstrating the equivalent standard of qualifications, proficiency and experience in electrical installation work, as well as the application fee.
Fees
The application fee is $200 for five years, which includes $70 non-refundable application fee, and must be paid at the time the application for a license is submitted.
Renewing your electrician's license
The ESV will forward a renewal notice to your last known address at least 2 months prior to the expiry date of the current license. It is, however, your responsibility to ensure your license is kept up to date at all times.
The renewal fee is $130 for five years.
Your responsibilities as a licensed electrician
As a license holder, it is your responsibility to understand the legislation and regulations in place at any time and work in accordance with them:
Part 3 of the
Electricity Safety Act 1998
; and
Electricity Safety (Installations) Regulations 1999
.
It is also your responsibility to certify that the electrical installation work is completed in accordance with the
Australian New Zealand Wiring Rules (AS/NZS 3000)
and any other relevant standards, testing is completed in accordance with the legislation, regulations and Wiring Rules and the relevant certificate of compliance within certificates of electrical safety is signed.
