Licensing and Registration


Find out about different types of licences and registration to work in electrical installations in Victoria.

Electrician's Licence (A Class/A/E Licence)

An Electrician's Licence may be issued for a period up to 5 years and entitles the holder to carry out all electrical installation work in Victoria without supervision. This licence holder may be able to perform the task of Technical Nominee for his/her employer.

Supervised Worker's Licence (L Licence)

A Supervised Worker's Licence may be issued for a period up to 3 years and entitles the holder to carry out all electrical installation work in Victoria under the effective supervision of a licensed electrician.

Disconnect/Reconnect Worker's Licence (D Licence/Restricted)

A Disconnect/Reconnect Worker’s Licence may be issued for a period up to 5 years and entitles the holder to carry out electrical disconnection and reconnection work that is incidental to your primary trade, vocation or calling.

Electrician (Supervised) Worker's Licence (ES Licence)

This licence is only available to people who have previously held a B-Grade licence and have continued to renew their licence every 5 years. An Electrician (Supervised) Worker's Licence is issued for a period of up to 5 years entitles the holder to carry out all electrical installation work in Victoria under the supervision of a licensed electrician.

Overseas Applicants

Persons who have electrical qualifications obtained outside Australia and New Zealand and who wish to carry out electrical installation work in Victoria may be eligible to apply for a Victorian electrical worker's licence, following assessment from Trades Recognition Australia (TRA).

Occupier’s Licence

An Occupier’s Licence may be issued for a period of up to 5 years and entitles the holder to carry out electrical installation work only in premises where the applicant is the genuine occupier. It is only for residential purposes.

Licensed Electrical Inspectors

An electrical inspector’s licence may be issued for a period of up to 1 year for the purpose of inspecting electrical installation work in one or more of 8 classes of work.

Mutual Recognition agreement

Mutual recognition means that any individual holding a licence or registration in one State or Territory or within Australia and New Zealand can apply for a comparable licence or registration in another State or Territory.
