Complying with obligations
When doing work, and on completion of work, it is important that gasfitters ensure the installation is safe. The work and the completed installation must comply with the relevant standard(s).
Compliance certificates
On completion of work on a standard or prescribed standard installation, a licensed gasfitter must provide a Compliance Certificate to the owner/occupier and lodge the details with the Plumbing Industry Commission within the prescribed period:
- If the work involves installing a gas appliance: or,
- where the cost of repair or servicing work exceeds $500.
Temporarily disconnecting and reinstalling the same appliance does not itself require a Compliance Certificate.
You must supply the gas company with a Compliance Certificate number before gas will be supplied to a new installation. Failure to complete and lodge a Compliance Certificate is an offence.
Gasfitting Notices
Before connecting gas to a complex gas installation, a prescribed standard installation or a Type B appliance, a Gasfitting (Start Work) Notice must be lodged with ESV. A submission accompanying a Gasfitting Notice is required for a new, modified or relocated Type B appliance.
On completion of the work, the gasfitter must complete and lodge a Gasfitting Compliance Notice with ESV. Failure to do so is an offence.
The gas company requires notification from ESV before gas will be supplied to a new installation.
