The Gas Safety (Gas Installation) Regulations 2008

In February 2008, the Gas Safety (Gas installation) Regulations 2008 came into effect.

A number of changes were made from the previous regulations and in particular, to the acceptance by ESV of complex gas installations and Type B appliances.

The regulations now require specific information to be provided to Energy Safe Victoria regarding the proposed installation. Refer to Part 4 of the Regulations.

As with the old Gasfitting Notice, ESV requires the applicant’s name and business address, PIC licence number, contact details and the installation address.

Other information now required relates to the details of the complex gas installation or the Type B appliance. The information required is dependent on a number of things detailed in schedules 7, 8, 9, 10 and 11 located at the back of the Regulations.

Thresholds have been set to categorize gas installations. The information you must provide depends on the category of your gas installation.

For all complex gas installations, you must provide the information listed in schedule 7 of the Regulations.

However regulation 31 (2) states that if the gas installation is to:

  • have a total gas rate exceeding 3.8 gigajoules (3800 MJ) per hour; or
  • have an operating pressure exceeding 200 kilopascals; or
  • be installed in a building exceeding 10 storeys above ground level

Then you must, in addition to schedule 7, also provide information that is listed in schedule 8 of the Regulations.

If you are submitting an application for a Type B appliance, you must in addition to schedule 7 of the Regulations, also provide the information listed in schedule 9 of the Regulations.

For more information on the schedules refer to section 3 of this document.
