Swift 500 Series Caravan Cookers

This update provides further details in relation to the scope of the appliances affected by the recall, and updated advice on the actions for owners of the Swift 500 series cooker.

The manufacturer has identified that on some cookers manufactured before 1 June 2020, the gas pipe on the front left hotplate burner may break without warning.  This can cause a significant gas leak that may ignite and explode.

Cookers manufactured on or before 31 May 2020 are within the scope of the recall. 

It is recommended that consumers with a cooker manufactured in this date range ensure that the front left burner control knob is in the off position and should remove the knob and store it out of reach of children and other users.

Please note that cookers manufactured before 1 January 2019 are currently under investigation by the manufacturer and the scope of the recall may be adjusted once the investigation is complete.

Cookers manufactured on or after 1 June 2020 are not affected by this recall. 

Consumers can use these gas cookers as normal following the instructions for use that were provided with the appliance. Further details relating to the recall are also available on the ACCC recalls website.

Energy Safe Victoria is recommending that owners of caravans and RVs with a Swift 500 series cooker (including cooktops, grills and ovens) stop using the cooker until further notice due to safety concerns. What has happened?

• Resources Safety and Health Queensland (RSHQ) has issued a safety alert about an incident in which failure of piping within a Swift 500 series cooker resulted in a gas leak which led to an explosion that caused burn injuries to the person using the appliance.
• The Department of Mines, Industry Regulation and Safety (DMIRS) in WA has also issued a prohibition notice for the Swift 500 series cookers following two incidents involving the cookers in Western Australia.

ESV is currently working with other gas safety regulators and the manufacturer, Swift Appliance Group, to implement a national recall. Recommendations

• Owners of caravans and recreational vehicles should check if their cooking appliance is a Swift 500 series cooker and turn off the gas supply. The electrical element can still be used.
• The gas supply to the appliance can be turned off at the gas isolation valve, adjacent to the appliance. This ensures that other gas appliances in the caravan or RV can be used safely.
• If you smell gas, turn off the gas immediately at the cylinders and contact a licenced gasfitter to check the gas system and all gas appliances for safe and correct operation.
